Entrevista a Clydie Pasia
Clydie es de Filipinas y tiene 26 años. Está involucrada activamente en CATWAP (Coalición Contra la Trata de Mujeres, Región de Asia Pacífico). Ha viajado extensamente a lo largo de Filipinas y a otros países debido a su rol de apoyo y a su trabajo en territorio.
¿Pueden los jóvenes realmente liderar el camino en la lucha contra la trata de personas, como el título del Simposio Juvenil del Vaticano de este año mantiene?
Sí, los jóvenes sin duda pueden liderar el camino en la lucha contra la trata de personas. La juventud no debe permitir que la esclavitud de hoy en día, que, irónicamente, ha existido durante generaciones antes de la nuestra, siga adelante. La trata, sobre todo con fines de explotación sexual, debe parar. Los jóvenes, junto con las mujeres, son las personas más vulnerables para ser captados como víctimas de la trata. Y como hemos vivido aquí en las Filipinas, los cambios y movimientos que se inician y que son conducidos por los jóvenes son cruciales para que las nuevas generaciones de hombres y mujeres combatan las causas sobre violencia, especialmente contra las mujeres y las niñas, que es el patriarcado, así como todas las otras formas de relaciones desiguales de poder entre razas, culturas, religiones y estatus económico que hacen a las personas más vulnerables a la explotación. Los líderes juveniles son vitales para ayudar a que hombres y mujeres sean críticos y para que tengan cultura para discernir con respecto a los medios y a las leyes y políticas que perpetúan las normas patriarcales y que siguen esclavizando a nuestras mujeres en una sociedad donde las mujeres y los niños son vistos como personas inferiores a los hombres.
Es importante desde una edad muy temprana los niños desafíen las definiciones tradicionales de la masculinidad y sean parte del movimiento que lucha contra el patriarcado y todas las formas de violencia contra las mujeres y las niñas. Los jóvenes tienen que enseñar a sus pares así como a los adultos que los hombres de verdad deben respetar y tratar a las mujeres como sus iguales. Siendo un hombre de verdad no significa mirar y tratar a las mujeres y niñas como objetos sexuales. Que los hombres de verdad no compran mujeres. Que los hombres de verdad comparten el poder con las mujeres y no las dominan. Esa lucha por la igualdad significa escuchar a las mujeres que durante mucho tiempo han sido silenciados por la sociedad, especialmente a las sobrevivientes, y el reconocimiento de que los hombres son otorgados al privilegio por el patriarcado, que tenemos que desmantelar y es la razón del por qué las mujeres se habían empequeñecido. De esta manera, los jóvenes no serían parte de una cultura en la que son autores de diferentes formas de violencia contra las mujeres y los niños, incluida la trata y la prostitución, sino que serían parte de la solución como aliados de las mujeres.
También es importante que las mujeres y las niñas se inspiren mutuamente. La hermandad que las mujeres y las niñas reciben unas de otras, además del apoyo de aliados masculinos, impulsan y fortalecen la valentía femenina y eso es la columna vertebral para hablar colectivamente por nuestros derechos, sabiendo que no estamos solos en nuestra lucha contra la desigualdad. Esto también ayuda a elevar nuestra autoestima, reducir la vulnerabilidad y evitar una mayor victimización de las mujeres
¿Qué opinas de las medidas contra la trata establecidas por Francisco?
El Papa pidiendo y abogando activamente para poner fin a la trata es algo que pone muy felices a los grupos progresistas. Se da por hecho y es muy importante que los sobrevivientes sepan que no serán juzgados, porque la palabra de ellos es lo que necesitan las víctimas, por ende, no tienen que tener miedo de hablar de la violencia que han pasado porque la iglesia tiene sus brazos abiertos para dar refugio. El Papa Francisco fue muy claro cuando dijo que la trata es un delito de lesa humanidad. Sí, es un crimen que siempre tiene víctimas y sabemos quiénes son los perpetradores. Este movimiento del Vaticano, por el propio Papa habla de coraje y esperanza. El Papa no está abandonando estas mujeres y sabe quién debe rendir cuentas.
La trata de personas es una industria que mueve mil millones de dólares a nivel mundial y tenemos que unirnos para luchar contra esto. El enemigo es grande, pero hay que saber que cuando venimos y trabajamos juntos para poner fin a la trata, somos más fuertes. Durante mucho tiempo, hemos estado trabajando de la mano con la iglesia en el rescate de las víctimas y en proporcionarles un refugio. Nadie puede hacerlo solo.
¿Cuál crees que es la causa del aumento en el número de personas víctimas de la trata en el mundo?
El número de personas víctimas de trata en todo el mundo aumenta debido a la falta de rendición de cuentas de los responsables, que incluyen a los traficantes, los proxenetas, los propietarios de burdeles / bar, pornógrafos; así como los que usan a las víctimas de la trata, o sea, los compradores de las mujeres y los niños, y los consumidores de sexo.
Políticas como la de Amnistía Internacional sobre «Trabajo Sexual», que despenaliza los especuladores y los compradores de la trata y la prostitución, también empeora la situación. Se perpetúa la impunidad y la violencia contra las mujeres prostituidas y explotadas sexualmente para el comercio. El ‘trabajo pro-sexo empeora la lucha contra la trata con fines de explotación sexual porque no reconocen la prostitución y la pornografía como una forma de violencia y explotación de las mujeres, sino simplemente como un trabajo «que debe ser» regulado. La prostitución considerada como trabajo niega la realidad de la violencia que las víctimas de la trata experimentan, y esto sólo ayuda a la ganancia de los explotadores quienes se benefician más de la industria del sexo comercial, mientras que las mujeres se descuidan y no se les proporciona ayuda, servicios, y tampoco se les da la posibilidad de salir de esta negocio.
Las desigualdades entre las razas, estatus económico, y entre los sexos contribuyen a la vulnerabilidad de los que se quedan en los márgenes. Además, existe la presencia de la demanda – los compradores – y el combustible que usan para el tráfico sexualel tráfico sexual, que es la forma más grande de la trata de personas. Mientras haya hombres que compran mujeres y niños, que se creen que tienen el derecho a comprar, la trata de personas para abastecer la demanda no va a terminar.
En su opinión, ¿qué pueden los ciudadanos y «la gente común» hacer para ayudar a víctimas de la trata?
Como se mencionó anteriormente, es importante hacer frente a la desigualdad en todos los aspectos de la sociedad, especialmente el patriarcado, que hace que las mujeres y las niñas sean víctimas de la explotación y la violencia, incluida la trata y la prostitución. Los ciudadanos y las personas comunes tienen que ser críticos y combatir nuestra cultura patriarcal y capitalista en todo el mundo que perpetúa y normaliza las desigualdades de la gente en nuestra sociedad y el abuso con fines de lucro sobre las mujeres y los niños.
Todas las personas deben escuchar a los sobrevivientes de la trata y otras formas de violencia y explotación,, porque es de ellos que vamos a conocer la realidad oscura contra la que hay que luchar. Y es a partir de los que vamos a saber qué es exactamente lo que necesitan para sanar y obtener justicia, y saber qué más podemos hacer para combatir la trata y otras formas de violencia.
Los líderes juveniles son muy importantes, los jóvenes deben luchar junto a las generaciones de más edad, porque este tema es algo que la gente de todas las edades, sexo, religión,, la raza y cultura deben combatir. Los jóvenes también deben escuchar y aprender de los que han estado en el movimiento contra la desigualdad y trabajar para luchar por la abolición de la esclavitud, como el tráfico y la prostitución, como también nosotros les debemos garantizarlos derechos por los cuales se ha luchado para las generaciones futuras. Debemos aprender de ellos y hay que luchar para dejar un mundo mejor y así inspirar a las próximas generaciones.

Can young people really lead the way in the fight against human trafficking, as the title of this year’s Vatican Youth Symposium maintains?
Yes, young people can definitely lead the way in the fight against human trafficking. The youth can and must not let modern-day slavery, which ironically has been around for generations before our own, go on. Trafficking, especially for sexual exploitation, must stop, hopefully in this lifetime. Young people, along with women, are the most vulnerable people to be preyed upon in human trafficking. And as we have experienced here in the Philippines, change and movements that are started and driven by the youth are crucial to make new generations of young men and women who as one combat the root-causes of violence, especially against women and girls, which is patriarchy, as well as all other forms of unequal power relations among races, cultures, religions, and economic status that make people more vulnerable to exploitation. Youth leaders are vital in affecting fellow young women and men to be critical and challenging of culture, mass media, oppressive laws and policies that perpetuate patriarchal norms that continue to enslave our women and youth in a society where women and children are seen as people lesser from boys and adult males.
It is important from a very young age, that boys challenge the traditional definitions of masculinity and be a part of the movement that fights patriarchy and all forms of violence against women and girls. That young men teach their fellow young men (as well as adult men) that real men respect and treat women as their equals. That being a real man means not looking at and treating women and girls as sex objects. That real men do not buy women. That real men share power with women and not overpower them. That genuinely fighting for equality means doing it side by side with women, listening to women who have long been silenced by society, especially survivors, and recognizing that men are bestowed upon privilege by patriarchy, which we must dismantle, and is the reason that on the other hand, women had been dwarfed. This way, young men would not be a part of a culture where they are perpetrators of different forms violence against women and children, including trafficking and prostitution, and instead be a part of the solution as allies of women.
It is also equally important to empower women and girls and have young women inspire one another. The sisterhood that women and girls receive from each other, aside from support from male allies, boost and strengthen female courage and backbone to collectively speak out for our rights, knowing that we are not alone in our fight against inequality. This also helps elevate our self-worth/ -esteem, and reduce vulnerability and prevent further victimization of females.
What do you think of the anti-trafficking measures established by Pope Francis?
The Pope calling and actively advocating in ending trafficking is something that the progressive groups is happy about. It is a statement to the survivors that they are victims and will not be judged. His words are what the victims need; they need not to be afraid to speak of violence that have happened to them because the church has its arms wide open to give refuge. He is very clear when he said that trafficking is a crime against humanity. Yes, it is not a victimless crime and we know who the perpetrators are. This move from the Vatican, by the Pope himself speaks of courage and hope. The Pope is not abandoning these women and he knows who should be accountable.
Trafficking in Persons is a billion dollar industry globally and we must come together and unite to fight this. The enemy is big but remember that when we come and work together to end trafficking, we are stronger. For a long time, we have been working hand in hand with the church in rescuing sheltering and providing shelter to this women. No one can do it alone.
What do you think is the cause of the increase in the number of trafficked people in the world?
The number of people being trafficked around the world increases due to the lack of or inadequate acquisition of accountability from the perpetrators of trafficking, which include its profiteers – the traffickers themselves, pimps, brothel /bar owners, pornographers; as well as those who use the trafficked victims – the buyers of women and children/ consumers of sex.
Policies such as that of Amnesty International’s Policy on ‘Sex Work,’ which decriminalizes the profiteers and buyers of trafficking and prostitution, also worsens the situation. It perpetuates impunity and violence against women in the form of prostitution and other forms of commercial sexual exploitation. The ‘pro-sex work’ lobby worsens trafficking for sexual exploitation as well, as they do not recognize prostitution and pornography as a form of violence and exploitation on women but merely ‘work’ that needs to be ‘regulated.’ Their considering prostitution as work negates the reality of violence that those trafficked and prostituted experience, and this only help the exploiters profit and benefit more from the commercial sex industry, while the women are neglected from being provided help, services, and escape from the industry.
The inequalities among races, economic status, and between the sexes contribute to the vulnerabilities of those left in the margins due to these to be trafficked. Also, the presence of the demand side of trafficking – the buyers – fuel sex trafficking, which is the biggest form of human trafficking. As long as there are men who buy women and children, as long as they think they have the right to buy them, the trafficking of persons to supply the demand will not end.
In your opinion, what can citizens and «ordinary people» do to help trafficking victims?
As mentioned above, it is important to address inequality in all aspects of society, especially patriarchy, that disturbingly make women and girls the vast majority of victims of exploitation and violence, including trafficking and prostitution. Citizens/ ordinary people need to be critical of and address and combat our patriarchal and capitalistic culture around the world that perpetuates and normalizes the inequalities of people in our society and the abuse for profit over women and children’s bodies.
All people should listen to survivors of trafficking and other forms of violence and exploitation as well, for it is from them that we will know the dark reality that we must fight. And it is from them that we will know what exactly they need to heal and get justice, and what else we can do to combat trafficking and other forms of violence.
While youth leaders are very important, young people should fight alongside older generations, too, as this issue is something that people of all ages, sex, religion, race and culture should fight against. Young people must also listen and learn from those who have been in the movement against inequality and working to fight for the abolition of slavery, such as trafficking and prostitution, before us, as we also owe them the rights that some of us get to enjoy today. Rights that they have fought for their and for future generations. We must learn from them that though we may never be sure if the fight for inequality would end in our own lifetime, we must also fight on to leave a better world that we aspire to inspire the next generations.
